Rozelle
Rozelle Courtyard House
Alterations + Additions
Renovation · Built
This compact inner-city cottage was reworked around the relationship between home and garden. Opening the dining room to a side courtyard, framing greenery through the kitchen and carefully extending the original building created a brighter, more connected family home.
The design began with the character of the original cottage. Rather than competing with its heritage qualities, the new work was carefully scaled and detailed to sit quietly alongside them—retaining the home’s familiar street presence while giving the family a more functional way to live.
On a narrow site, every part of the footprint needed to work harder. The underused side setback became a planted courtyard, allowing the dining room and kitchen to borrow light, outlook and a sense of spaciousness without relying on a large addition.
With a new baby arriving and a firm budget to manage, the project focused on thoughtful, high-impact changes. Simple materials, efficient planning and strong connections between rooms created a warm, practical home that could support the family through its next chapter.
01 / THE BRIEF
Client: Private Location: Rozelle, NSW Project Type: Alterations + Additions Status: Built Scope: Architecture + Interior Design
The brief called for a brighter, more generous family home on a constrained site. The design brought the side setback into everyday use, creating a courtyard that extends the dining space and brings planting, daylight and fresh air into the experience of the interior.
02 / EXISTING + CONCEPT
HERITAGE CONTEXT
The workers’ cottage as an early Sydney layer
Rozelle’s workers’ cottages form part of an early layer of Sydney’s suburban growth, shaped by the harbour industries, trades and working communities that developed across the Balmain peninsula. Built on narrow allotments and close to the street, these modest homes created a fine-grained neighbourhood of compact rooms, simple roof forms and small rear gardens.
Their value lies not only in individual details, but in the collective rhythm they bring to the street, the consistent scale, setbacks and closely spaced façades that tell the story of everyday life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Here, the original cottage remains legible as the familiar public face of the home, while the new work sits behind it as a quieter contemporary layer.
CONCEPT
Making the footprint work harder.
The courtyard connects the dining area, kitchen and open entertaining spaces, bringing them into a closer relationship within the compact site.
03 / DESIGN
An outdoor room
The dining area opens directly to the courtyard, allowing the two spaces to work together for family meals and entertaining.
A considered addition
The ensuite pop-out responds to the scale and form of the original cottage, with a simple contemporary finish.
A garden-facing kitchen
A long window at benchtop level brings daylight and a view of planting into the working heart of the home.
A window in place of a splashback.
A long frameless window gives the kitchen a continuous view of greenery. Set between the benchtop and overhead joinery, it brings natural light into a practical working space and makes the garden part of everyday cooking.
04 / HERITAGE & NEW
A new chapter for the original cottage.
The addition responds to the existing home's character through its proportions and roof form. Simple detailing and timber cladding distinguish the new work, while the cottage retains its identity within the streetscape.
05 / MATERIALS & EVERYDAY SPACES
White surfaces and simple joinery give the compact rooms a calm backdrop. Warm timber and planting add texture, while colour at the doors and in the furnishings brings a more personal layer.
White interiors · a light, continuous backdrop. Timber · warmth and texture at the courtyard. Greenery · a connection to the outdoors. Retained details · the character of the original home. Colour · individual accents within a restrained palette.
A quiet palette, with room for character.
