Garden Within
Alterations + additions
Alterations + Additions · Unbuilt
Randwick Terrace Courtyard House reworks a terrace home around a planted courtyard, bringing more sunlight and a stronger connection between indoor and outdoor spaces to a constrained urban site.
Warm timber, sandstone and muted terracotta create a restrained material palette, softened by foliage and changing light.
01 / THE BRIEF & OVERVIEW
Project name: Randwick Terrace Courtyard House Location: Randwick, Sydney, NSW Project type: Terrace alterations and additions Current status: In council Scope: Architecture, interiors and courtyard landscape
Garden as the centre of the home.
Living, kitchen and dining spaces gather around a planted courtyard, making a small outdoor space central to everyday life.
With party walls, close neighbours and limited outdoor space, the design focuses on bringing more sunlight into the home and creating usable indoor–outdoor connections while respecting privacy.
The courtyard is the organising idea: a pocket of light and landscape that gives the surrounding rooms space to breathe within a tightly enclosed terrace setting.
02 / EXISTING + CONCEPT
A planted courtyard organises the rear addition, linking living, kitchen and dining with the garden. An enclosed route connects the front rooms for year-round comfort.
The courtyard brings sunlight deeper into the plan and creates an outdoor retreat within the terrace footprint. The placement of openings and the relationship between rooms and landscape respond to party walls and close neighbours, balancing indoor–outdoor connection with privacy.
03 / PLANS
The plan balances quieter rooms at the front with shared living spaces toward the rear, using the courtyard to introduce light and outdoor connection into the centre of the terrace.
Rather than relying only on the rear outdoor area, the courtyard creates another point of contact with sunlight, fresh air and planting within the home.
A sheltered entry and clear circulation route connect the bedrooms, living spaces, courtyard and rear outdoor area. The proposed layout supports movement between inside and outside while responding to the boundaries and close neighbouring buildings.
04 / MATERIAL PALETTE
Pale timber, warm stone, muted terracotta and layered greenery create a calm, tactile palette connected to the courtyard and changing light.
Final materials will be selected for suitability, durability, maintenance, emissions and cost, while planting will respond to soil volume, daylight, mature size and site conditions.

06 / BEHIND THE PROJECT
Randwick Terrace Courtyard House is a residential alterations and additions project currently under council assessment. The design centres on a courtyard that brings more sunlight and meaningful outdoor connection to a terrace home with party walls and close neighbours.
The proposal brings together planning, interiors and landscape, making the most of limited outdoor space while balancing the household's needs with the privacy and proximity of neighbouring homes.
The project remains subject to council assessment and approval. AI-assisted visualisations illustrate the proposed character, materials and spatial relationships rather than completed construction.
