Davistown
Hamptons House
New Built
DA + CC · New Built
An undeveloped waterfront parcel offered the opportunity to create a new home within an established neighbourhood. The brief was to make the most of the narrow site, bringing the client's aspirations together with the possibilities of its picturesque setting.
01 / The Brief
PROJECT DETAILS
Client: Private Location: Davistown, NSW Project: New built Scope: Full architectural services Status: Built
The brief called for a home that made the most of the narrow waterfront site, balancing maximum functionality with privacy for each family member and generous shared spaces for spending time together.
02 / EXISTING + CONCEPT
A narrow site with a generous outlook.
The waterfront was central to the brief. Early feasibility work explored what the vacant green-field site could accommodate and how a new home could sit within the established residential setting.
03 / THE DESIGN
A coastal character, from street to water.
The design studies explore a two-storey home with gabled forms, pale cladding and covered outdoor spaces. Cross-braced balustrades and layered rooflines give the house its Hamptons-inspired character.
A considered footprint
The narrow proportions of the land shaped the arrangement of rooms and circulation.
Space to look out
Covered terraces and balconies bring outdoor living into the design's response to the waterfront.
A clear architectural language
Gables, light cladding and fine balustrade details create a consistent character across the elevations.
04 / THE PLANS
Working with the proportions of the land.
The plans show the arrangement of the two levels and their relationship to the outdoor spaces.
05 / MATERIALS & DETAILS
Light tones and familiar coastal forms.
The exterior studies bring together white detailing and soft grey cladding. Repeated lines in the boards, balustrades and pergola give the elevations texture without relying on strong colour.
Pale cladding — a restrained backdrop. White detailing — definition at roofs, posts and balustrades. Cross-braced forms — a recurring coastal reference. Planting — softness around the built form.
06 / THE PROJECT JOURNEY
Understanding the site before building on it.
Sediment and shells identified during feasibility prompted further heritage investigation and reporting. This added an important layer to understanding the site, alongside the practical opportunities and constraints of a new residence.
Residential Studio provided the full scope of architectural services for the home, completed in 2023.
