Complying Development

A richly layered kitchen renovation where dark timber, soft light, and everyday rituals gather at the centre of the home.

The project transforms an existing kitchen, small dining area and enclosed sunroom into a more functional sequence of kitchen, dining and pantry spaces. Dark timber finishes create a sophisticated, grounded interior, while a new opening to the rear deck establishes a generous pass-through and strengthens the connection between cooking, entertaining and outdoor living.

The sloping site and proposed changes to the external envelope added another layer of complexity, requiring the alterations to be carefully resolved through the Complying Development pathway.

01 / THE BRIEF

The existing kitchen and adjoining spaces felt fragmented and underutilised. The brief was to completely strip out and replace the kitchen, rethink the former dining and sunroom areas, and create a more generous and efficient arrangement for everyday living.

The former sunroom was repurposed as a dedicated pantry connected directly to the new kitchen, while the rear wall was opened to create a pass-through to the elevated deck. The material direction was intentionally darker and more sophisticated, centred around rich timber tones and a restrained interior palette

The new plan consolidates cooking, storage and entertaining while creating a stronger relationship between the interior and elevated rear deck.

05 / THE HOME

FLOW: Bringing together the previously fragmented kitchen, dining, and sunroom spaces.

STORAGE: Repurposing the former sunroom as a dedicated pantry, directly connected to the kitchen.

CONNECTION: Opening the rear elevation to strengthen the relationship between the kitchen and the elevated outdoor deck.

This project is being developed in close collaboration with the client, consultants and builder, with a focus on respecting the character of the original home while creating a healthier, more beautiful way to live.
